Conway advises that depending on your access to a sunroom, indoor herb gardens will likely require grow lights to thrive. “Invest in some LED or fluorescent grow lights and be prepared to dedicate a significant amount of space to a proper light setup for your indoor herbs to succeed,” he says. For indoor gardens, Hovis urges people to be mindful of proper drainage solutions in their pots or planting vessels to prevent waterlogging. Bookmark this page if you want to save some backyard space but still create an amazing landscape for less money. You can plant your favorite flowers at the base of the trees or simply let the lawn do its magic. If it’s a minimalistic landscaping idea you’re into, you surely won’t exceed your backyard budget with this idea.

Easy Formality

They used a monolithic outdoor fireplace for garden zoning, dividing the backyard into different sections, as a folding screen might in a studio apartment. A huge deck area has a built-in white brick fireplace as the center of the gathering area. Surrounded by cushioned loveseats with an umbrella-covered dining area in the back, this modern deck is great for entertaining outdoors.

What are some simple and inexpensive backyard landscaping ideas?

Vines can be used as privacy screening or to hide an unsightly fence or wall, while trailing plants can be displayed in hanging baskets and window boxes. Consider how much time you’re willing and able to devote to maintaining your backyard landscape. Certain hardscape materials, furnishings, and plants are easier to maintain than others. If you have an elaborate landscape, you may want to hire outside help for mowing, weeding, or other garden chores. If your backyard consists of turf lawn, the soil will be compacted and devoid of nutrients.

#6 // Well-Placed Retaining Wall

A fire pit is usually the middle of the action, where guests gather around it. An outdoor fireplace, on the other hand, tends to be on the periphery, larger than a fire pit, and generally more opulent. Some come with mantles, they can be modern or rustic, and they are made from an array of materials. When building your outdoor fireplace, try to place it in a direction that blocks prevailing wind, so it retains more heat for those sitting in front of it. Bond over a fireside chat, stay warm while stargazing, have a date night in your own backyard, roast marshmallows, or just get mesmerized watching the flames flicker and dance around. From rustic to elegant, wood fuel or propane, a backyard fire pit is sure to see a lot of use.

This cute play area combines the feel of a treehouse and a larger playground by adding a slide to the elevated platform. A fire pit doesn’t have to be huge in order to create a cozy entertaining space. This small backyard places a portable fire pit in one corner with just two Adirondack chairs for intimate gatherings.

Choose plants that are appropriate for the light and soil conditions. Plant trees and shrubs for privacy and shade, and add perennials, groundcovers, and annuals for color. Select varieties that bloom at different times and have colored foliage, bark, or berries for multi-seasonal interest. Not all beautiful backyard ideas have to be labor-intensive or expensive. You can add softness, color, and design interest with printed cushions and a tablecloth.

Drought-tolerant plants have adapted to drier climates and will naturally use less water than other plants. Treat this unit the way you would the rest of your home by adding a walkway and incorporating the same landscape design around it. You might also consider planting some flower beds around the structure or placing a seating area nearby.

Drought tolerant plant should especially be considered for drier climates and any areas where there are water restrictions. If you live near a busy road or somewhere with lots of noise pollution, a waterfall, running creek or rain fountain can help buffer the noise. You can also take a more rustic decorating approach and use twigs and branches instead of flowers. Installing a bird feeder ensures regular visits from a variety of species, turning your backyard into a lively habitat.

Grow Your Garden Path

You've got things like verbena, salvia, lavender, ecinachea - they've got that wild flower look going on so I think that's the kind of road you need to go down,” Isabelle said. Tom recommends drought tolerate plants such as aloe, agave or cacti for your balcony, if you are interested in growing succulent type species. You want the lightest plants and furniture at the furthest viewpoints so that you elongate the space. Lighter colours at the end are going to draw the eye out and your space is going to be a bit bigger,” explained Isabelle.

Letting climbing plants grow on either of these structures adds even more charm and will create a picturesque point of interest in your backyard. Honeysuckles, potato vines, grapevines, wisteria and trumpet vines are all excellent choices for your pergola or arbor. We've found 23 diverse designs and solutions for small backyards and outdoor spaces, from urban to suburban and everything else in between. Add visual interest to your backyard with a wildflower garden that requires minimal investment. Another idea is to create a path using mulch or gravel, which are affordable materials that also suppress weeds and enhance soil moisture. Consider using hanging planters or trellises to grow climbing plants.

An outdoor kitchen with amenities such as a built-in barbecue and preparation surfaces ensures you have everything at hand. A built-in sound system allows you to enjoy music without bulky speakers cluttering your space. Decks and patios are outdoor extensions of your home where you can relax and entertain. You can choose from a variety of shapes, colors, and textures to create a personalized look. Consider the topography and drainage to ensure structure and design integration with the landscape. When considering plant selection and arrangement, aim for a balance of form, color, and texture.

Embrace the slope by incorporating a waterfall, sliding board, or stone staircase that's practical and provides vertical interest. Just like they do indoors, rugs help define a space, add color, and up the cozy factor to any outdoor area. Specially designed to stand up to weather and wear, outdoor rugs are ideal for exposed or high-traffic areas and are oh-so-easy to clean. Creating separate areas for different functions will make a backyard feel larger. Connect rooms with pathways or transition areas and use hedging, containers, plant groupings, fencing, or lattice to screen garden rooms.

A contemporary fireplace or couch sectional will complement a modern style home, while a fire pit and Adirondack-style furniture are more suited to a bungalow or rustic cabin. Laying down a garden path will instantly break up the space visually. It will also make walking around the backyard much easier and more pleasurable. Exploring backyard path ideas is a must if yours is all lawn and doesn't have distinct zones. Garden borders present many opportunities to get imaginative with your backyard design.

Smaller and more private than a hot tub, this outdoor bathtub is the ultimate place to relax. String lights, painted wood decor, and Adirondack chairs help create a rustic, calming area to unwind. If your garden is always full of blooms, turn an outdoor shed into your own personal flower shop! This shed has a gorgeous wood interior with plenty of shelves for storing garden supplies and extra vases.

Renting a car allows you to explore Miami at your own pace and provides the convenience of having a vehicle throughout your trip. However, keep in mind that taxi fares can be relatively expensive, especially during peak travel times or if you encounter heavy traffic. It’s advisable to estimate the cost in advance and factor it into your travel budget.

Located just a few miles east of Miami International Airport, it boasts state-of-the-art facilities, a robust cruise ship lineup, and easy access to the vibrant city of Miami. However, it’s important to note that ride prices may vary depending on factors like demand, distance, and time of day.

Port of Miami Cruise Guide: Everything About Sailing From Miami

It’s a neat way to know what other mega ships you will see while on your trip. Independent LotsIn addition to parking your car at the port, there are a number of independent lots on the mainland, across from the cruise port. While these lots aren’t near as convenient as parking right at the ship, they do offer transportation to and from the cruise ship. The distance between Miami International Airport (MIA) and the cruise ship terminal, known as the Port of Miami, is approximately 8 miles. The cruise ship terminal is located on Dodge Island, just east of downtown Miami.

Taxis to the Miami Cruise Portal

As you can see, there are several transportation options available to travel from Miami airport to the Fort Lauderdale Cruise Port. Whether you prefer driving, public transportation, shuttle services, or taxi/ride-sharing services, each option offers its own set of advantages to suit your needs and preferences. It’s important to note that during peak travel times, there may be high demand for taxis and ride-sharing services, which could result in longer wait times or surge pricing. If time is of the essence, consider booking a ride in advance or opting for other transportation options like shuttle services.

While that means you’ll have to deal with South Florida traffic, it is a convenient way to get to your ship. Driving offers you the ability to arrive exactly when you want and to leave to get home as soon as you debark the ship. There is also ample parking at the Port of Miami, but know that it will cost $22 per day ($25-$28 if sailing from the Royal Caribbean terminal). Regardless of the method you choose, it’s important to plan ahead, consider traffic conditions, and allow for sufficient travel time to reach the cruise ship terminal. By doing so, you can embark on your cruise vacation with ease, ready to enjoy all the excitement and experiences that await you onboard.

Buses

In the same neighborhood as the Hampton Inn, you'll find the upscale, full-service JW Marriott Miami. Nights start at 35,000 points, so you can use a Marriott 35k free night certificate on some dates of the year. Depending on your elite status tier with Marriott Bonvoy, you might be eligible for free breakfast at this hotel.

There are usually dozens of them working in the terminal, making the line move quickly. When it’s your turn, you will set up your onboard spending account, get your room keys and then proceed to the ship. If your car has special modifications — such as ramps or driving controls — or you have a Florida Disabled Veteran license plate then you can park for free. For more details, see our article on free parking for disabled passengers here. Note that parking at Royal Caribbean’s Terminal A is $25 per day for sailings of six nights or more. There is space for oversized vehicles like RVs, but the rate is an additional $22 each day.

But these upgrades do come at a price; while normal Uber and Lyft rides can cost anywhere from $16 to $20 per way, not per person, UberX and LyftPlus charge around $23-$40 per way. Ride-sharing options such as Uber and Lyft have opened up a whole new world of affordable transport for travelers. The beauty of these options is that you can either pre-book them ahead of time before you’ve even arrived or book them once you are ready to be picked up from the Miami airport. If you choose to go this route, there are free (i.e included in your room’s stay) hotel shuttles that you can use to get you from the Miami airport to the cruise terminal on the day of the cruise.

For an economy car, prices start from $28 per day, plus fuel of course. Allow minutes for the journey plus minutes for drop-off and shuttle transfer to the cruise terminal. Several buses run regularly from Fort Lauderdale Airport to Miami including Greyhound. If you are traveling as a couple or a group, Uber or a similar private rideshare service could be a good choice. They will pick you and your luggage up from Fort Lauderdale Airport and transport you comfortably to the Miami cruise terminal.

The same shuttle runs about $37 one-way/$74 round-trip per person from the Fort Lauderdale airport. Ride-sharing services have opened up a much cheaper and convenient way to get to the port. Uber and Lyft are available from the Miami and Fort Lauderdale airports, so no matter where you fly, you can catch a ride to the ship. Below, we’ve covered the main options to get to the cruise port, along with estimated prices from the major airports.

From here you can get a great view of all of the Miami area, looking out east to South Beach or west to downtown. Terminal ACurrently one of the crown jewels of the Port of Miami, Terminal A is exclusive to Royal Caribbean and is a monument to the cruise line. Featuring a modern styled look, Terminal A is at the far east end of the port, and is large enough to handle Royal Caribbean’s biggest ships, which are the largest in the world.

This floor was under renovation during our visit but the ground floor exhibits were worth the visit alone. At the end of the gardens, turn south on Calle Buenes Aires and left on Calderón de la Barca towards Mina Square. The square was the orchard of a Franciscan Convent until it was turned over to the city becoming a public space in the mid-19th century. It is surrounded by homes built for the Cádiz wealthy in the 1800s. One of them is the Casa Pinillos, which became part of Museum of Cádiz in the early 2000s. Continue to the end of Avenida Dr. Gómez Ulla and the Candelaria Bastion.

Estimated calls of cruises

Car rental and official blue and white taxis are also available near the terminal. Regularly scheduled ferries connect Cadiz to the Canary Islands via 1 weekly crossing per port (in the Canaries). However, like in any tourist destination, it’s wise to stay aware of your surroundings and take standard safety precautions, such as guarding your belongings and avoiding deserted areas at night. Planning your visit to Cádiz with these considerations in mind will not only enhance your travel experience but also ensure you make the most of your time in this beautiful part of Spain. Whether you’re sipping sherry in Jerez, marveling at Seville’s architectural wonders, or wandering through the white-washed villages, these excursions promise memorable adventures that complement your time in Cádiz. Exploring beyond Cádiz can significantly enrich your travel experience in Andalusia, offering a deeper understanding of the region’s history, culture, and natural beauty.

The castle sits on an island which, over time, held several different types of buildings. The wood from it was used in the mid-15th century by Venetians to build a chapel. A 17th-century watchtower was the first defensive structure on the island. Appropriately, the beautiful, white building on the beach is the Andalusian Centre for Underwater Archaeology.

Cadiz for Cruise Passengers

The city has been a trading post, a port, and a base for exploration for over 3,000 years. Enjoy inviting plazas, well-preserved churches, historical monuments, and picturesque alleyways without a guidebook. Cadiz is in the Andalusia region of Southwestern Spain and an entry point to Spain.

If you REALLY do want an itinerary then keep scrolling as I’ve put some links to free walking tours in this guide too. As you know I am a keen advocate for exploring port independently without the need to buy costly shore excursions, and Cadiz (much like A Coruna) is a perfect port to explore on your own. It’s full to the brim beautiful things to see and do and most of it contained in an area not more than a mile from the ship. Plaza San Francisco has beautiful cafés, a great place for a drink or a restaurant meal. From the plaza, take any of the streets heading east back the port. To walk out to the castle, access Canal Bridge through the Cove Gate or from Caleta Beach.

Tourists can explore local cuisine, history, culture, parks, and space highlights. This place is full of history, stunning beaches, architectural beauty, and a sunny climate. Explore the impressive Cádiz Cathedral, the art and history in the Museum of Cádiz and the city’s picturesque streets, plazas and gardens.

However, it’s a good idea to carry some cash for small purchases, local markets, or in places that might not accept cards. Embarking on a cruise that docks in Cádiz offers an exciting opportunity to explore one of Spain’s most enchanting cities, along with the rich cultural tapestry of Andalusia. Whether you’re wandering through its ancient streets, savoring its culinary delights, or soaking up the sun on its beautiful beaches, remember to savor every moment. Visiting Cádiz by cruise offers a unique opportunity to explore one of Spain’s most historic and vibrant cities.

The Roman theater of Cadiz dates back to the 1st century BC and is located next to the Cadiz Cathedral, 900 m (an 11-minute walk) from the Cadiz cruise terminal. This beach is wide and quite long and offers amenities such as showers, toilets and a few bars and restaurants. There are many local vendors selling refreshments at a very affordable price (make sure you have some local currency on you) so you can soak up some Mediterranean sun while sipping the local beer or Don Simon sangria. The city of Cadiz is located on a peninsula and all the beaches are located along its western coast.

You can spot it already from the ship as it is the only building that stand out above the horizon. This is one of the largest cathedrals in the country and it is absolutely worth visiting. In the 1980’s a couple of warehouses in the city burned down. The sight is not always open, but why not try as you walk by. You’ll find a bus station just outside of the port, but please know you do not need it in town. Pretty much the entire city centre of Cadiz is pedestrian zone and the busses only go around.

It is open to visit, the views are amazing… but it doesn’t have a lift! The town market with interesting stalls and place to eat is between the tower and the southern sea wall you just walked along so that would be another diversion if you’re not interested in the roman remains or the cathedral. The town museum in the the Plaza de Mina and contains many relics and artefacts from the city’s 3,000-year history. The Plaza de San Juan de Dios is an excellent place to visit first.

Close to the port, this vibrant square offers stunning architecture, including the church of San Juan De Dios, the town hall and an ornate fountain. Other buildings of intrigue include Cádiz Cathedral, where a visit to the bell tower offers panoramic views of the city, and the Roman theatre and museum. The cruise terminal situated alongside Alfonso XIII pier, offers cruise passengers a safe and comfortable welcome to Cadiz. Instead of a bus tour, we believe walking the Old Town is a better idea. The great thing about the Port of Cádiz is that the city centre is really close.

A Venetian boat crew recovering from the plague built a small chapel here centuries before, while there are many stories suggesting settlements dating back much further in time. If you are overnighting in Cadiz or your cruise is leaving late in the evening, this is the best spot in town to catch the sunset. Clearly visible from the sea from both sides of Cadiz, the golden dome of Catedral de Santa Cruz has become an iconic symbol of the city. In bars and cafes in Cadiz, locals tend to just leave the change in coins if there are any.

It is located on Plaza de la Libertad, a few blocks away from Cadiz Cathedral, only 12 minutes walking distance from the Cadiz port (850 m). This spacious green square is located right across the Cadiz cruise terminal, less than a 5-minute walk from the exit (170 m). The main square is dominated by the imposing building of the City Hall of Cádiz (Ayuntamiento de Cádiz) and is surrounded by numerous shops, restaurants and cafes. Here, you will also find a tourist office, a pharmacy, banks and other historic landmarks. Cadiz cruise terminal is located within a 5-10 minute walk from the city center and its highlights.

The main shopping area and much of the town is easily covered on foot. Right outside the terminal you’ll find the hop on hop off bus and plenty of taxis. This long, narrow pedestrian plaza is lined by cafés, restaurants and ice cream shops and anchored by city hall at its western end.

Norwegian Cruise Line Reviews 2024 All You Need to Know

complaints about norwegian cruise line

Our reviewers evaluate products and services based on unbiased research. Top Consumer Reviews may earn money when you click on a link. Very disappointed that 2 ports of call on our forthcoming cruise have been cancelled for sea days due to "Port Congestion" - really? Should never have been advertised if berths were not secured in advance. Too late to cancel without losing a significant deposit.

Another update and final of my review…

And, when we went to reach out for help via live chat, it took a long time to connect with an agent - and even when we did, the chat was super-slow and we waited over 10 minutes to get an answer to our one question. But, we give Norwegian somewhat of a downgrade for its safety record. The cruise line has had several incidents in recent years, including a fire on one of its ships in 2019 and a mechanical issue on another ship in 2018.

Is norwegian cruise line a scam or a legit company?

Made numerous calls but NCL wouldn't acknowledge their mistake. I would've cancelled if it weren't for the other people I had recruited to come. I have 5 months until the sailing and greatly regret booking again with NCL and also recruiting new cruisers to book with them. Their crap defies common decency so look elsewhere and save yourself a headache.

Guest Experience - After your cruise

complaints about norwegian cruise line

I sent a letter addressed to the CEO, no response either. Sent a follow up letter to the agent and the CEO once again. The agent informed me that he sent the bonus to one of the people in my group and suggested that I get it from him. I asked that he alert the passengers and refund me as I was the Group Leader and signed the contract.

At the time of our review, NCL had a promotion in place offering free airfare for the second guest on the booking, which could be a pretty significant savings depending on your departure port. The air promotion Norwegian offered is worthless. They put us on indirect flights which take many more hours than direct flights. Also, they can only book flights with 2 days before and after the cruise departure and arrival.

Whether it’s a problem with accommodations, food quality, service, or any other aspect of your trip, it’s important to know how to file a complaint effectively. Let's face it, sometimes unforeseen things happen; bad weather, delayed flights and even cancellations. If your flight is changed or a weather-related delay leaves you stuck while you're traveling to one of our Freestyle Cruises®, don't panic. The first thing you should do is immediately advise an airline representative at the airport that you are a guest of Norwegian Cruise Line, and you are on your way to join our cruise ship.

Overall cruise experience

The club balcony suite needed vacuuming as there was significant amount of debris on the carpeting and under the bed (where the suitcases were stored). When in port the ship tilted to the rear so if the shower was used it rose above the lip and flooded the bathroom. The sliding closet door fell off during the night. No information regarding the ship was present in the room and the newsletter was predominately a list of activities and service contacts with inundation of leaflets pushing purchasing options.

Speaking of amenities, make sure you understand what you'll get as part of your fare and which extras will come with an additional cost.
